Indie Pop/R&B Singer Nevi Brandan
More than just known for his great looks, artistic visions, and style, Nevi Brandan is an artist in Atlanta that everyone needs to be listening to. Originally from, Mason, Tennessee, Nevi grow up with music and art, make him the artist that he is today. Learn about how his experience as a musician, his obsessive love from Brandy, and why he feels that R&B has not died.
Travon: What is the message behind your music that you want your audience and fans to hear?
Nevi: I don’t really have a message. Music to me should be very relative. When it comes straight from the heart it reaches the heart. My music will reach someone that is going through similar life experiences. So, I guess the message is that everyone goes through the same life experiences. We just deal with them differently - whether you’re going out to party or falling in love.
Travon: What makes you stand out the most out of every, other independently-known artist in the music scene of Atlanta?
Nevi: I try to be Nevi. I have inspiration but, as an artist, I do my own thing. That is what makes me stand out. I’m not afraid to take a risk and always looking for a way to reinvent myself.
Travon: I like the fact that you are your own “creator”. I like that fact that you know how you want your image to look like and that fashion is one of the artistic visuals that you have within your artistry. Have you always been a good dresser? Describe your style and why it sets you apart from other musicians in the industry.
Nevi: I would say that I grew up around very artistic people. I got teased a lot about the way I dressed. I grew up in Mason,Tennessee [Tipton County], everyone wears T-shirts and jeans. Fashion does not play an important role there. I have just always had a eye for fashion. Photography enhanced it. Studying trends and magazines really pushed me to be out the box. When I moved to Atlanta, I got to exercise what I teased about. Retail jobs also allowed me to be more hands on. Styling at work [and] pulling wardrobe for shoots - this reminded me how visual I was as a person and that it’s okay to be artistically different with fashion. A lot of artist in the industry don’t set trends. Most of them look like the last Pop or R&B artist. I like to set trends.
Travon: Growing up, what type of music, such as different genres and/or artists were you into and what artists influences your music today?
Nevi: Growing up, I listened to R&B. I did not know about love or heartbreak growing up. But, I know it made my soul feel warm. It was not something I really could escape from. I have a huge love for it. I am a huge Brandy fan. Back at home, folks [would] go, 'Why Brandy"? But, in Atlanta, they have nothing but love for [Brandy]. I started singing because of her. She is my biggest musical influence. Brandy helped me escape. She taught me that it was okay to just be you. She is the reason I fell in love with R&B. Her passion for music sustained my love for it. Hearing her story restored my confidence and self-esteem growing up. She plays a big role in why I’m so confident, outgoing and headstrong.
Travon: What’s your favorite part about being a solo artist?
Nevi: I get this question a lot. I can say being a solo artist for me is therapeutic. In groups, you are not allowed to divulge yourself. It’s mainly about compromise. Solo allows you to express who you are. It also allows you to grow as an artist.
Travon: If you could choose one record label to sign with in the future, who would it be and why?
Nevi: Colombia! They give artists a chance to take risk. Their artists have longevity within the music industry. They create icons.
Travon: Alongside music, what other interests do you have on the day-to-day basics?
Nevi: Well, that's really all I do. It's [music that I am] always involved [in]. However, I’m very skilled in the arts. I sing, draw, I'm a photographer, I’d modeled, and I can design. So, if it artsy, I'm interested.
Travon: Describe to me what is the ‘Nevi’ life like.
Nevi: I am a very optimistic person. I have to take RISK! People would define me as insane because my life looks very up and down. But, I'm very balanced. I also listen to my heart. I never doubt myself. The Nevi life is about always jumping and landing on my feet. If I happen to fall, I get back up.
Travon: Tell us about your new single ‘Moonlight’ and how the song came about.
Nevi: Moonlight is about a party life and one night stands. Something I am too familiar with. I am very sexual. Moonlight was written about four years ago. When I was ready, I recorded it. There was a debate with this song. But, I decided to release it.
Travon: FKA Twigs said to ‘The Fader’ magazine that the genre ‘alternative R&B’ should die, considering that the music industry indicates that if you are “black”, on an independent route and have hints of pop and/or electronica influences within your music that you are entitled to be known as an ‘alternative R&B’ artist. Other artists such as The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Banks, Solange, and Kelela have all been indicated as this category in music. Though, you are a pop singer, what is your intake on this statement that FKA Twigs mentioned?
Nevi: R&B can never die in my opinion. It’s a force of sound that gets you through a break up [and] a long day. It puts you in the mood and calms you. You are able to express yourself. Everyone is so hooked on the partying nowadays. It's not that R&B is dead, it's very much alive. People are just not buying music anymore. This happens in the black community often. You have people on corners, in stores with an album or a mix tape. Every song is on the radio or they download it for free. Sales start to drop then labels start to fear signing R&B artists and the numbers slowly fade. This makes artists [transform into] pop or Alternative. Just to hold on to what they fell in love with. So, I say if you want the genre to last, buy the music. Support artists.
Travon: What makes you inspired by ‘Pop’ music the most versus other genres?
Nevi: Pop is my lane. It is what comes natural to me. Took me a long time to except that. I can sing anything but, it always makes me feel amazing. I also love to see people's reaction when they hear my music - whether upbeat or a ballad.
Travon: What is your biggest fear in life?
Nevi: My biggest fears were conquered when I realized that being fearful would stop me from growth. No fears here.
Travon: Congratulations on making the #1 spot on the Reverbnation charts. I am sure that you are extremely proud of this accomplishment.
Nevi: Thank you!
Travon: How would you describe your personality, characteristics, and interest? Would you say you’re normal or would you say you’re artistically different?
Nevi: I always hear how humble I am. But I'm just very quiet and very cautious. I used to stay shy. Far from it now, I’m cautious. I have to observe everything and everyone. When I'm comfortable I began to reveal. I'm a goofy and loving person that would give my last. I thank my family for that. So, I guess you can say it’s all I know. I think I'm normal but, clearly I am artistically different. That is something I’m proud of and will never change.
Travon: Are you working on any new projects? Please share with us.
Nevi: I am [smiles gracefully]. There will be a music video for 'Moonlight', followed by more. As for the other news, you’ll have to just wait and see.
